Psi-k Update Number 1 (December 2009)
We have decided (and hope to stick to it!) that we should write a *short* monthly update on topics related to our community.
The Psi-k Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC - get to know the initials) has just met for two days in Berlin with 31 people present out of a total membership of 61 . That attendance is a bit below normal, but some members are on a 'can be consulted' basis. One day was spent on selecting 5 plenary speakers and 110 invited talks for our big Psi-k2010 Conference (12-16 Sept. 2010). The website for the conference is http://www.fhi-berlin.mpg.de/th/Meetings/psik_2010/ and the names can be seen when people have been approached and agreed to perform, at http://www.fhi-berlin.mpg.de/th/Meetings/psik_2010/program.php
The other day in Berlin was spent refereeing and agonising over the 22 proposals received for tutorials, trainings, summer schools conferences and research workshops. Unfortunately only 90 k Euro was available for them in view of the needs of the big conference. Finally only 10 could be funded, giving priority to the educational activities because the research workshops are to some extent covered by the 22 symposia at the Psi-k2010 conference.
The total of financial contributions from our members is reasonably stable, giving somewhat more than 170 k Euro from 37 sponsoring groups in 13 European countries. We are very thankful for this since it is our only income.
A short meeting was held of the Psi-k Board of Trustees (of the charity Psi-k) with 10 members. We remind you that this structure was legally required when we became a charity company after our ESF funding stopped. But in truth the growth in the size of our community and all the changes going on are requiring quite a lot of detailed email correspondence and 'conference' telephone discussion of issues which we will report on in future Psi-k Updates.
