Psi-k Update Number 7 (June 2010)
1. Psi-k VH Young Investigator Award
2. European Annual Condensed Matter Conference
First: The VH Award Committee has selected five finalists out of 24 applicants for the new Psi-k Volker Heine Young Investigator Award, who will give talks at a special award session at the Psi-k 2010 Conference in Berlin, 12. -16. Sept. 2010.
The standard of the applicants was astonishingly high. It was really hard work for the committee members to select five applicants from the many outstanding proposals. Thus we can look forward to hearing 5 great talks in Berlin and recommend now already to attend the award session. It is wonderful to see that there are so many talented young researchers around, which is great for the future of our field.
Second: Many of us have long felt the need to have a European equivalent of the American “March Meeting” of the American Physical Society, as a gathering of the whole clan of Condensed Matter Physicists. And many of us hoped that the European Physical Society would establish such a meeting, but that did not work out.
The Psi-k Trustees now encourage all Psi-k members to adopt and attend the annual March Meeting of the German Physical Society (DPG Spring Meeting of Condensed Matter Division) as our European Annual Condensed Matter Meeting. All talks are now given in English and it has transformed into a Europe-wide meeting with about 5.000 participants. For instance this year’s meeting in Regensburg, March 21-26, had 5.114 participants and 4.540 talks and posters. You can find the program on the internet (Google: DPG Spring Meeting 2010). The next meeting 2011 will be in Dresden, 13.-18. March 2011 and the 2012 meeting will be in Berlin and 2013 in Regensburg. The hotel reservation for the Dresden Meeting could be critical, since this is a rare joint meeting of “Condensed Matter Section” of the DPG with the “Section Atom and Molecular Physics”, so that one might even expect around 7 000 participants and hotel reservations should be done very early (even now already).
For some years already Matthias Scheffler et al. are organizing on this conference a Symposium “New Frontiers in Electronic Structure Theory” (title is always slightly different), which has developed very well and was this year accompanied by four sessions of contributed papers. The organizers for next year are Lucia Reining, Xavier Gonze and Matthias Scheffler. Many other ab-initio contributions are in the Sections Surfaces, Magnetism, Metals, Semiconductors, etc. Deadline for abstracts: not yet announced, likely 1. December 2010.
The conference fee is reasonable: 110 Euro for DPG and/or EPS members, 220 Euro for non-members. Hotel costs are rather low in Dresden, Berlin and Regensburg. Thus we believe that this DPG Spring Meeting should develop into a meeting place of the Psi-k community.
