Dear Prof. W. Temmerman

Following your invitation to submit proposals about Workshops to be held in 2003 for partial support by ESF Ψk Program, we submit to your attention the present application.

To the Ψk Program secretary, Walter Temmerman ().

Workshop Proposal for 2003:

1)
Title and purpose of the workshop, with names and addresses (including e-mail) of the organizers.

Workshop Title: XIII Workshop on Computational Materials Science 2003 (CMS2003)

Purpose:
The purpose of this Conference is to bring together young and senior scientists working in different fields of Solid State Physics, Chemistry, and Biophysics.

Organizers:
a) V. Fiorentini,
ADDRESS :
Dipartimento di Fisica
Universita' di Cagliari
Cittadella Universitaria
09042 - Monserrato (CA), Italy
e-mail:

b) F. Bernardini,

2) List of Invited Speakers:

3) Plans for a tutorial element and for attracting new researchers into the subject of the workshop.

We plan to continue the tradition of this Conference, with a format made of poster and short oral contribution from regular participants and tutorial-style presentations from the invited speakers (2-3 session of 1 hour, each invited speaker). This format has two advantages, 1) young researchers can learn from leading senior scientists about the advances made on the most important subjects in Condensed Matter Physics, 2) young researcher can advertise their work in their specific field and, thanks to the friendly atmosphere of this Conference, they can discuss informally with the other participants.

4) A budget, expressed in Euro, and how much is being applied for from the ESF Ψk Program. This support in the past has been limited to $\sim$9k Euro.

For approximately 90 participants (75 regular participants + 15 invited speakers) we estimate a budget of 60000 Euro. We will appreciate the maximum possible support of the ESF Ψk Program, since presently we do not have any other sponsorship.

5) A statement of other organizations which will be applied to for co-sponsorship and additional funding, eg. the RTN Network on Computational Electronics, other RTN Networks, CECAM, CCP-9 in the UK,
etc..

None so far.

6) Where it is hoped the Workshop would be held.

Location of the Workshop: Villasimius, Sardinia Italy.

7) Very little money is available for American participants. If there is a wish to have several, I suggest to include an American co-organizer with an NSF grant, who can perhaps/probably get a few thousand dollars extra for this purpose from the NSF International Materials Science Program (director Lance Howarth).

None so far.

Sincerely Fabio Bernardini
On the behalf of the Organizing Commitee
of the CMS2003 Workshop.
