2) The scientific content and why a workshop would be useful at this time.

Interdisciplinarity is one of the most important aspects of modern science. This Workshop brings together researchers from different fields of Condensed Matter Theory and Biophysics, gives them the possibility to discuss on the recent advances in these fields and last but not least offers the opportunity to young participants like PhD student and Post Docs to get connections with Universities and Laboratories of other countries. This is especially important for the University of Cagliari, that because of its geographical isolation, needs an occasion to get in contact with outer groups.

3) Tentative list of Invited Speakers:

4) The number of participants it is planned to invite or attract, and their scientific involvement, e.g. as simulators, related experimentalists, code developers etc., and young scientists in the subject.

We plan to have 60 regular participants and 10 invited speakers. Most of the regular participants are young scientists, whose interest is to learn about recent advances in simulation techniques. Usually this conference is the starting point for collaborations with the Institutions represented by one of the invited speakers. The outcome of this collaboration is the implementation of new algorithms in existing codes or the acquisition of new software by the young scientists attending the conference.

5) Plans for a tutorial element and for attracting new researchers into the subject of the workshop.

We plan to continue the tradition of this Conference, with a format made of poster and short oral contribution from regular participants and tutorial-style presentations from the invited speakers (2-3 session of 1 hour, each invited speaker). This format has two advantages, 1) young researchers can learn from leading senior scientists about the advances made on the most important subjects in Condensed Matter Physics, 2) young researcher can advertise their work in their specific field and, thanks to the friendly atmosphere of this Conference, they can discuss informally with the other participants.

6) A budget, expressed in Euro, and how much is being applied for from the ESF Ψk Program. This support in the past has been limited to 9k Euro.

For approximately 70 participants (60 regular participants + 10 invited speakers) we estimate a budget of 50000 Euro. We will appreciate the maximum possible support of the ESF Ψk Program, since presently we do not have any other sponsorship.

7) A statement of other organizations which will be applied to for co-sponsorship and additional funding, eg. the RTN Network on Computational Electronics, other RTN Networks, CECAM, CCP-9 in the UK, etc..

None so far.

8) Where it is hoped the Workshop would be held.

Location of the Workshop : Maracalagonis, Sardinia Italy.

9) Plans about inviting and financing any participants from America.
See separate announcement directly after this one, about having an appropriate
American co-organizer of the workshop.

No American co-organizer so far.
