SCOPE OF THE WORKSHOP:
This workshop will bring together leading scientists as well as young researchers
in computational nanoscience, in the area of the physical, chemical
and biological processes of "nanomatter". We expect to have about 100 participants.
The workshop aims at stimulating interdisciplinary research efforts between
experiments and simulations across the boundaries between physics, chemistry
and biology. To facilitate interactions between experiment and simulation,
a number of experimental talks are included in the program.
2. SCIENTIFIC CONTENT:
The program will consist of invited lectures (about 20), short "hot topic"
talks, selected on the basis of submitted abstracts, and poster sessions.
The schedule of the talks will be planned to leave ample time for discussions.
The invited speakers have been selected to represent a wide range of research
areas in nanoscience to enhance the exchange of ideas and results between
disciplines. We feel that this kind of scientific meetings are particularly
important at this time when the whole concept "nanoscience" is still in
a very early developing stage. Young researchers and post docs will benefit
from this workshop by being able to present their research via posters or
"hot topic" talks, as well as by participating in the tutorial sessions
on the modern electronic structure theory (see point #5).
3. TENTATIVE LIST OF SPEAKERS:
- Wanda Andreoni (Switzerland)
- Thorsten Bernhardt (Germany)
- Jussi Eloranta (Finland)
- Thomas Frauenheim (Germany)
- Giulia Galli (USA)
- Ralph Gebauer (Italy)
- Bjork Hammer (Denmark)
- Ulrich Heiz (Germnay)
- Olli Ikkala (Finland)
- Robert Jones (Germany)
- Bengt Kasemo (Sweden)
- Atsushi Nakajima (Japan)
- Uzi Landman (USA)
- Elisa Molinari (Italy)
- Michael Moseler (Germany)
- Gianfranco Pacchioni (Italy)
- Michele Parrinello (Switzerland)
- Karsten Reuter (Germany)
- Ursula Roethlisberger (Switzerland)
- Angel Rubio (Spain)
- Giacinto Scoles (Italy)
- Annabella Selloni (USA)
- Massimiliano DiVentra (USA)
- Robert Wolkow (Canada)
- Ludger Woeste (Germany)
4. NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS:
We expect to have about 100 participants, with a significant portion of
young researchers and post docs. Probably 70% of the participants are expected
to have "hands on" experience on electronic structure simulations.
5. TUTORIAL ELEMENT:
We are planning 1-2 tutorial sessions on modern electronic structure theory.
This will be arranged in collaboration with the Center for Scientific Computing
in Espoo, Finland, with Dr. Tuomas Torsti as the lead person. In addition,
we are planning to have a panel discussion about challenges in simulation
and modelling of nanostructures, with Academy Professor Risto Nieminen from
the Helsinki University of Technology as the chairman (confirmed). The members
of the panel will be selected later from the list of invited speakers.
6. BUDGET:
FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO BE APPLIED FROM:
| European Psi-k network | 9 000 EUR |
| University of Jyväskylä | 1 000 |
| Academy of Finland | 6 000 |
| US source | 2 000 |
| Total | 18 000 |
We expect 80 paying participants x 250 EUR registration fee = 20 000 EUR
Total income: 38 000 EUR
EXPENSES:
| Local costs (incl. hotel) for invited speakers 25 x 600 | 15 000 EUR |
| Local costs for paying participants 80 x 250 = | 20 000 |
| Administrative costs | 2 000 |
| Social programs etc. | 1 000 |
| Total expenses: | 38 000 EUR |
Paying participants will pay directly to hotels.
7. THE OTHER FUNDING ORGANIZATIONS:
As shown in the budget above, we plan to apply for funding from the Academy
of Finland, University of Jyvaskyla, and from a US source that will be decided
later.
8. PLACE AND TIME
The wokshop will be held on the Natural Sciences Campus of University of Jyvaskyla
June 18-21, 2004. The workshop will start in the morning of Friday June 18
and end in the evening of Monday June 21. This will allow for participants
to travel utilizing economy airfares which require Saturday night stay. Sunday
afternoon will be reserved for social program (possible excursion).
9. We are currently planning to invite 4 speakers from USA and one from Canada. Dr. Annabella Selloni is in charge of applying for US funding for the workshop.
